Removal of effective right-turn lanes
has caused serious traffic hazards

The recent modifications to Malop Street resulted in the removal of the right-turn lane into Fitzroy Street from Malop Street.

This presents motorists with a confusing situation when two cars , one from each direction, want to turn right into Fitzroy Street.

The first time that I was faced with situation, I was in the intersection waiting to turn right, when one of the vehicles coming from the opposite direction also want to turn right.

This vehicle stopped in the traffic lane in Malop Street for about five seconds before deciding how to proceed with the right turn. During this time, other traffic was swerving left across the bicycle lane to avoid the stationary car.

The car finally decided to pass on my left as it turned.

However, on another occasion, when faced with the same situation, the other turning car passed on my right. Such is the confusing nature of the modified intersection.

Other right-turn lanes around the CBD have been shortened and had the ends squared-off, effectively making them even shorter. These seriously affect traffic flow, making the city an uncomfortable place to visit.
